About this event

Rangers on the Ridge: Volunteer Wilderness Ranger Patrols

Cheaha Wilderness

Nov 7

9am

Trail Leader: Jonathan Kelly

Are you interested in becoming a Volunteer Wilderness Ranger? Are you already a Ranger looking for an opportunity to patrol the Cheaha Wilderness? If so, Rangers on the Ridge is for you!

Building on the success of Wild Alabama's Volunteer Wilderness Ranger Program in the Sipsey Wilderness, we are excited to expand regularly scheduled patrol opportunities into the Cheaha and Dugger Mountain Wilderness areas. These patrols provide an opportunity to protect and steward these special places while connecting with fellow volunteers who share a passion for Alabama's wild lands.

During this patrol, participants will explore the northern portion of the Cheaha Wilderness while assisting with wilderness stewardship activities such as trail monitoring, documenting trail conditions, removing minor trail obstructions, collecting litter, and interacting with visitors when appropriate. Volunteer Wilderness Rangers play an important role in helping visitors enjoy these public lands responsibly while preserving their wilderness character.

Current Volunteer Wilderness Rangers are encouraged to wear their ranger uniforms or Wild Alabama-issued ranger shirts.

If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer Wilderness Ranger, this is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the program, meet current Rangers, observe patrol procedures, and gain hands-on experience in wilderness stewardship.

Participants should be prepared for a full day on the trail with moderate to strenuous hiking and a respectable amount of mileage.

Please bring:

• Plenty of water and hydration supplies

• Lunch and snacks for the day

• Insect repellent

• Appropriate hiking attire and footwear

• Ranger gear (for current Rangers)

Additional details, including the meeting location and start time, will be provided by email upon registration.

Our programs and outreach hikes are (mostly) free of charge yet we gladly accept donations to help support the consistent and continued stewardship programs year after year. You can use the express donation feature at the top of this page.
