Otter Exploration Hike to Choccolocco Shelter
Talladega National Forest
Nov 29

Trail Leader: Jonathan Kelly
December may bring one of our best opportunities to spot river otters! In Jonathan’s experience, they have been easier to observe during the winter—perhaps because bare trees improve visibility or because otters may become more active during daylight hours. Whatever the reason, let’s head out and look for them!
These remarkable animals are exciting to observe, and they can be found right here in the Talladega National Forest. Because otters are wild and elusive, sightings cannot be guaranteed, but we’ll enjoy exploring their habitat and watching for signs of their activity along the way.
We’ll hike approximately 4 miles to Choccolocco Shelter, which provides long-distance hikers with a place to rest and escape the weather. It also makes a wonderful picnic spot and turnaround point for a day hike.
This relatively easy hike includes mild elevation changes and a few hilly sections.
Bring water, snacks or lunch, weather-appropriate clothing, and binoculars or a camera if you have them.
